Knowing Your Way Around the Kitchen: Cooking Knives
By: The-Cooking-Guide.com Admin
There are huge varieties of cooking utensils on the market today. For just about any cooking action you wish to perform, chances are that there is not just one but a dozen or two utensils you could get to do it. One cooking utensil that serves many purposes and comes in many varieties is the cooking knife.
Types of cooking knives
A knife is not longer just a cooking utensil used to butter your bread or cut up your steak into bite-sized pieces. Today cooking knives come in all shapes, colors, sizes, and designs – all with various purposes of use.
Many chefs will probably agree that there are at least three main knives that every cook should have in his or her collection. These three types are: a chef’s knife, a paring knife, and long serrated knife. A chef’s knife can measure anywhere from six to twelve inches in length. At its widest point, its blade should be a minimum of 1.5 inches wide. A chef’s knife is typically put to use in order to chop up or slice food. It can chop a large amount of food fairly quickly and easily.
On the other hand, there is the paring knife. This type of knife generally has a blade that is three to four inches long, and ¾-inches at its widest depth. Cooks use paring knives to perform cooking tasks such as paring vegetables, making cuts in dough, slicing thin pieces of meat, and for trimming poultry.
One last knife that you should have in your collection is one that is fairly long and serrated. This type of knife will make it easy for you to cut bagels and bread. Others use this type of knife to cut foods with soft skins, like tomatoes. It is always great to get creative with your cooking utensils. You never know what positive benefits you will discover from experimenting with your cooking utensils.
How to pick out the right knife for you
When shopping for kitchen knifes, you should keep a few points in mind. First of all, you will want to pick out a knife that feels comfortable for you to use. If you take a look at the knife you are examining, and place a sturdy grip on it, you will be able to tell how well it suits you. There should be an equal balance between the knife’s blade weight and the weight of its handle that you are holding in your hand. Also, be sure that the knife fits properly in your hand. If it feels too big, then chance are that it IS too big. Get a knife that you can grip comfortable in the palm of your hand.
If you are looking for the best quality cooking knife, you should get one that is forged. A forged knife is one that originated from a solitary piece of metal that was smashed and ground during several different heating stages, to make it the sharp utensil that you find before you. Forged knives are stronger than lower-quality stamped knives.
